La Brisa
A beach club on the foreshore of Echo Beach in Canggu, built from the wood of old fishing boats and sold by the daybed.
La Brisa stands on the foreshore of Echo Beach at Canggu, on Bali, facing the Indian Ocean. A Bali guide places it at the quieter north-western end of the beach, on Jalan Pantai Batu Mejan. The same guide says it was created by the team behind Potato Head; the operator's own site names no group.
The day is sold by the seat: beach daybeds and beachfront bean bags, with other seating areas priced on their own terms, and some places held first come, first served. Tables are booked through the operator's online system; groups of twenty or more go through the operator directly. A daytime booking made online carries no minimum spend; from four in the afternoon a minimum spend applies to the same places. An eight per cent service charge and ten per cent government tax are added to the bill. Online bookings were open from one in the afternoon to eight in the evening when read.
Built from boats. The structure is made with reclaimed wood from more than five hundred old fishermen's boats, hand decorated, and a guide describes it as almost entirely of boat timber and driftwood.
Priced by the hour of the day. The same daybed costs one thing in the afternoon and another after four, when the minimum spend starts. Coming early is the way to have the place without a spending floor.
A kitchen of the coast. The menu runs to char-grilled tiger prawns, ceviche and pizzas, with cocktails made from ingredients sourced on the island.
Who it is not for
La Brisa is wrong for anyone who wants a quiet evening on a fixed budget: from four o'clock a minimum spend applies, and service and tax are added on top of every price. It is wrong for a large party that has not arranged things in advance, because groups of twenty or more must go through the operator. And it is wrong for someone who wants a private stretch of sand, because the club sits on the open foreshore of Echo Beach.
