Karma Beach

A resort's beach below the limestone cliffs of the Bukit, reached by hill tram, with cabanas and a published minimum spend.

Editorial entry · sources recorded · operator confirmation pending

Karma Beach lies at the foot of the cliffs below Karma Kandara, a resort of Karma Group at Ungasan on Bali's Bukit Peninsula, on the Indian Ocean. The resort stands on the clifftop and the beach is reached down the limestone face by what the operator calls Bali's first licensed hill tram. An independent guide adds that visitors take a shuttle bus to the hotel first, free for those using the club.

The operator describes family days of watersports, beachcombing, all-day dining, special events, spa treatments by the water, yoga, fitness and private cabanas. The day is sold against a minimum spend, published by the operator as a current offer that includes a cocktail made by the bar; cabanas carry a higher minimum. Reservations go through the resort's reservations desk by telephone, WhatsApp and e-mail. An independent guide gives the hours as ten in the morning to nine at night, every day except Nyepi, the Balinese day of silence.

A members' frame around a public day. The resort presents the beach within Karma's private members' club, yet the minimum-spend offer is published for anyone, and a free guest membership through the Karma Subito app gives ten per cent off food, drink and spa for a week.

Two kitchens on the sand. Beside the main restaurant, with its own children's menu, Tandoori Bar & Grill serves Indian cooking on the beach, which the operator calls the only beachfront kitchen of its kind on Bali.

Built for families as much as for couples. The operator's own words begin with families, and children's menus and activities are part of the day.

Who it is not for

Karma Beach is wrong for anyone who wants to walk on to the sand from a road: the way down is by the resort's tram, after a shuttle to the hotel. It is wrong for a visitor wanting a quiet adults-only afternoon, because the day is pitched at families and special events. And it is wrong for someone who wants a single clear price before arriving, because the operator's offer and an independent guide give different figures for what an outsider pays.
