Reef Beach Club

The beach outlet of a resort in Nusa Dua, with loungers and cabanas on the sand and no public way found to buy the day.

Reef Beach Club stands on the beachfront at Nusa Dua, on the south-east of Bali in Indonesia, at the foot of The Apurva Kempinski Bali. It is the resort's own outlet and sits between the tropical gardens and the sand. Its centre is a 42-metre infinity pool; around it are cabanas, sun-loungers and sunbathing spots on the beachfront, with an open kitchen, a bar and an indoor dining room behind. Watersports are offered from the same stretch of shore.

The kitchen is a charcoal grill, meat and seafood, served from breakfast through an all-day menu that runs into the evening, when live music turns the place towards dinner. The operator asks for advance reservation and holds a table for fifteen minutes; the dress code is casual. What the operator's page does not say is whether someone staying elsewhere may take a lounger or a cabana, or on what terms. No public way to buy the day was found.

A hotel's beach, first. Everything about the club is described from inside the resort: the pool, the loungers, the grill. It is a facility of The Apurva Kempinski Bali rather than a free-standing club on the beach.

Outside guests, once announced. When the club opened, a Bali magazine reported that it welcomed outside guests as well as hotel guests, and a later headline in the same magazine announced that a day-pass fee had been dropped. Neither page shows the present terms, and the operator does not repeat them.

Family by day, music by night. The operator describes a relaxed, family-friendly setting at lunch and a romantic one in the evening, with live music.

Who it is not for

Reef Beach Club is wrong for a visitor who wants to arrive, pay at the door and take a lounger: no public offer for the day was found, and the operator gives only a telephone line and a reservation requirement. It is wrong for anyone after a party; the evening here is dinner with live music. And it is wrong for someone who wants a club with its own life apart from a hotel, since this one is the resort's beach.
