Sundays Beach Club
A cove at the foot of the Ungasan cliffs, reached by an inclinator or 270 steps, sold to anyone by the day pass and free to the resort above.
Sundays Beach Club lies at the base of the cliffs at Ungasan, on Bali's Bukit Peninsula, facing the Indian Ocean. The club is part of The Ungasan Clifftop Resort, which stands above it. The way down is the operator's own: an inclinator that descends the cliff face, or 270 steps for those who prefer to walk.
The day is sold as a Daily Beach Pass, walk-in only, first come, first served. The operator publishes the price: IDR 800K for an adult, of which 500K is credit for the breakfast, lunch and dinner menus; IDR 400K for a child of five to eleven, with 250K of credit; children under five enter free. The pass covers the inclinator ride, a welcome drink, a bean bag and umbrella on the sand, towels, and use of the kayaks, paddleboards and snorkelling gear. Guests of the resort enter without charge and have an area of their own. The club is open every day; the kitchen runs on a seafood menu.
The tide sets the day. The operator states plainly that bean bags and watersports depend on the tide, and that space on the sand does too. It posts the day's conditions each night and keeps a tide chart online. At high water the beach narrows.
The sun leaves early. Because the beach faces out from under a cliff, the operator notes that the sun sets behind the clifftop at about half past four or five. Those who come for the sun come early.
An evening after the sun. Live music runs daily from five to eight, sunset bonfires with marshmallows follow, and on the last Sunday of each month there is a themed event.
Who it is not for
Sundays is wrong for anyone who cannot manage a cliff descent if the inclinator is out of use, since the alternative is 270 steps. It is wrong for a late riser who wants afternoon sun on the sand, because the cliff shades the beach from about half past four. And it is wrong for a visitor who needs a guaranteed bed: there is no booking for the pass, the bean bags go first come, first served, and at high tide there are fewer of them.
