Serpenti Beach
A strip of sand below a limestone cliff at Uluwatu, reached by an inclined lift and given to the resort's own guests as part of their stay.
Serpenti Beach lies at the foot of the limestone cliff that carries Bvlgari Resort Bali along the southern coast of the Bukit peninsula, at Uluwatu, on Bali's Indian Ocean shore. The resort stands on the clifftop, some 160 metres above the water by the operator's account. Bulgari opened it in September 2006 with 59 villas, designed by Antonio Citterio and Partners. Below, between the cliff and the ocean, runs the sand that the opening release gave as a kilometre and a half long. The operator calls the place The Beach and, since its recent redesign, Serpenti Beach.
The day here is not sold. The operator describes the beach as a sanctuary reserved solely for in-house guests, and the beach with its beachside restaurant as available only to those staying; the day comes with the room, as part of the stay, and no ticket, bed or minimum spend is offered to a visitor. The redesign set out four sets of sunbeds and one cabana in the golden-orange of the house's Serpenti line, with cool towels and refreshments brought to the sand. No hours or season were published.
One way down. The operator names a single route, an inclined lift followed by steps cut into the cliff, and the 2006 release already called the beach accessible only through the resort's lift. The descent is part of the arrival.
Very few beds. Four sets of sunbeds and a single cabana are the whole furniture of the redesign, on a stretch of sand far longer than they need. What is sold elsewhere as a club is here a handful of places for the resort's own guests.
A name taken from the jewellery. The design follows the Serpenti motif, the snake that the operator presents as a symbol of metamorphosis and wisdom. The resort's Serpenti Pool Club is a different place and should not be confused with the beach.
Who it is not for
Serpenti Beach is wrong for anyone not staying at Bvlgari Resort Bali: the operator keeps it for in-house guests and offers no day to a visitor, so it cannot be bought as an outing from elsewhere on the Bukit. It is wrong for someone who wants a club in the usual sense, with music, a crowd and a long menu, because the furniture is four sets of sunbeds and one cabana. And it is wrong for a traveller who needs published hours or a season to plan around, because the operator gives none.
