The Sands Atlantic Beach
A members' cabana club on the Long Island shore, sold by the season, never by the day.
The Sands Beach Club stands at 1395 Beech Street in Atlantic Beach, New York, at the west end of the Long Beach barrier island in the Town of Hempstead, facing the Atlantic. It holds 12.25 acres of white sand and has been on Long Island's south shore since the 1970s. Beside the beach it keeps an Olympic-sized heated pool, basketball and volleyball courts, a playground and a snack bar.
The club is for members only. It sells no day: what it sells is a season, from 29 May to 6 September 2027, as a private cabana or a shower cabin. A full cabana for up to four members of one household, with two car passes, runs from 10,700 to 35,630 US dollars for the season, by row and view; half and third shares are offered, and shower cabins run from 6,740 to 7,540. A visitor can come only as a member's guest, escorted by the member, and pays a daily guest fee of 25 to 35 dollars for an adult; Mondays and Wednesdays are free guest days outside holidays.
Priced by row. The cabanas are laid out in blocks back from the sea, and the price falls with each row from the ocean-view front to the poolside back.
A summer camp on site. A day camp for children aged three to fourteen runs through the season, with swimming lessons, sport and crafts.
One of a shore of clubs. Atlantic Beach grew around beach clubs, and the Sands has served as a filming location for Law & Order.
Who it is not for
The Sands is wrong for anyone who wants a single day at the sea: there is no day product, and a non-member can enter only as an escorted guest. It is wrong for someone visiting outside summer, as the season runs from late May to early September. And it is wrong for a solitary traveller, because the club is built around households, children and the long season.
