La Palapa
A family-owned restaurant on Los Muertos since the 1950s, which sets out loungers on the sand by day.
La Palapa stands on Playa Los Muertos in the old town of Puerto Vallarta, in Jalisco on Mexico's Pacific coast, at Pulpito 105-3 in the Emiliano Zapata district. It is a restaurant first: a local history published in 2015 dates it to 1957, founded by Rodelinda and Guy Dickey with another investor, under a palapa roof designed and built by Guillermo Wulff. The restaurant was redesigned in 1987 by the architect Salvador Pérez, a member of the family, and in 2015 it was still family-owned and managed by Alberto Pérez González.
The beach club is the daytime part of the house. It runs from half past eight in the morning to half past four in the afternoon, with extendable cushioned loungers, shaded umbrellas and private tables on the sand, and the full restaurant and bar menu served to the loungers. Loungers are reserved through the operator's reservations page, by telephone or by e-mail. The operator publishes no minimum spend and no party-size rule.
A restaurant that keeps the beach. The loungers are an extension of a dining room that has stood on this sand for decades; the kitchen, not a pool or a DJ, is the centre of the day.
Closed by late afternoon. The beach service ends at half past four, leaving the evening to the restaurant.
One family across generations. Founded by one branch of the family, rebuilt by another and run by a third member in 2015, the house has not been sold to a group.
Who it is not for
La Palapa is wrong for anyone who wants a long afternoon on a lounger into sunset: the beach service closes at half past four. It is wrong for a visitor looking for a pool, music or a party, since the day is built around the restaurant menu. And it is wrong for someone who wants a fixed published price for the lounger, because the operator states none.
