Barbarossa Beachclub

A seasonal beach pavilion on the Zwarte Pad at Scheveningen, renting sunbeds by the half day or the full day since the summer of 2013.

Barbarossa Beachclub, which trades as Barbarossa Beach, stands at Zwarte Pad 61 on the beach at Scheveningen, the seaside district of The Hague, facing the North Sea. It is a strandpaviljoen, one of the row of pavilions on the Zwarte Pad, and like them it is put up for the beach season and closed through the winter months. It has been there since the summer of 2013.

The day is sold as beds on the sand. The operator rents its sunbeds per dagdeel, a morning or an afternoon, or for the whole day, and they can be reserved online or by phone. No price is published. Guests stay on the bed and order from the restaurant, which brings food and drink out to them. In season the pavilion is open every day from early morning until late; the city's tourist office gives the hours as ten in the morning to ten at night.

Beds you can recognise from the dunes. The loungers are dark blue with white-striped cushions, set out facing the sea, and the operator calls them recognisable.

A restaurant first. The pavilion looks more like a restaurant than a beach bar, and serves breakfast, lunch and dinner: fresh fish, thin-crust pizza, salads and vegetarian dishes with Mediterranean or Asian touches, and a children's menu.

Built for occasions. Weddings, company dinners, team days, barbecues and children's parties are booked as packages, with quotes answered within a day.

Who it is not for

Barbarossa Beachclub is wrong for a winter visitor: the pavilion closes outside the beach season. It is wrong for anyone who wants to know the cost of a bed before booking, because no price is published. And it is wrong for someone looking for an empty beach, because it stands among a row of neighbouring pavilions on the Zwarte Pad, with events and parties of its own.
