Malamala Beach Club

A day club with an island to itself in the Mamanuca group, reached by boat from Port Denarau and left again before evening.

Editorial entry · sources recorded · operator confirmation pending

Malamala Beach Club occupies Malamala Island, a 5.5-acre island on a reef in Fiji's Mamanuca group, about half an hour by catamaran from Port Denarau on Viti Levu. There is no hotel on it: the island is a day club only, with white sand around it, a resort-style infinity-edge pool, an open-air restaurant, a cocktail bar and an area for adults called The Venue. It is owned by South Sea Cruises, which runs the boat.

The day is sold by the operator as a pass that includes the crossing, return coach transfers from most hotels around Nadi, Denarau, Vuda and Wailoaloa, towels, Wi-Fi and non-motorised sports equipment. The current price list, valid to 31 March 2027, sets a full day at FJ$215 and a half day at FJ$185; the full-day boat leaves Port Denarau at half past nine. A place on the sand is an upgrade on the pass: a Beachside Cabana for one or two people is FJ$139, with a poolside day bed at FJ$99 and larger cabanas for groups of up to twelve.

An island without rooms. With no rooms on the island, the day is set by the boat timetable: guests arrive on the morning sailings and leave on the afternoon ones. The whole island can be chartered for private events and weddings.

The pass is the transfer. Collection from the hotel, the catamaran and the return are in the price, which makes the day a single purchase rather than a chain of bookings.

A first-year count. A Fiji guide's anniversary piece reported 27,000 guests in the club's first year, with a menu designed by the chef Lance Seeto.

Who it is not for

Malamala is wrong for anyone who wants to stay the night, or to watch the sun go down on the island: the last boats leave in the late afternoon. It is wrong for a family expecting a reduced fare for children, since the boat operator charges children as adults and keeps The Venue for those of sixteen and over. And it is wrong for a traveller who wants to come and go freely, since arrival and departure follow the vessel.
