Copacabana Barbados

A beach club on Carlisle Bay, a short distance from Bridgetown, built around travellers with a flight or a ship to catch at the end of the day.

Editorial entry · sources recorded · operator confirmation pending

Copacabana Beach Club stands on Lower Bay Street in Bridgetown, in the parish of St. Michael, on the sand of Carlisle Bay, the beach nearest the capital and some two and a half kilometres from the cruise terminal. A 2018 account places it on Browne's Beach, the stretch of the bay it faces. The water here is calm, and several shallow wrecks lie just offshore, visited for turtles, rays and reef fish.

The club is open every day from nine in the morning to half past six in the evening. The day is sold as beach loungers, umbrellas, day beds and cabanas, and the club's site lists day passes in its navigation and sends bookings to an external reservation system; it publishes no price of its own. An independent day-pass seller lists a pass with lunch, a beach chair, a towel and a shared umbrella. Behind the sand are an indoor and outdoor restaurant, a sports bar and a beach bar, with water sports, games and live music or a DJ.

A departure lounge on the sand. The club calls itself the world's first beach departure facility. It began as a service for one airline's passengers, checked in on the beach in the afternoon and taken to the airport for evening flights, and is now open to all departing air and sea travellers.

Built for the lost day. Air-conditioned bathrooms, showers, changing rooms, secure lockers, luggage storage and towels are part of the offer, so a guest who has left a hotel at noon can spend the afternoon on the beach and leave clean.

A working room as well. The club also keeps a co-working space, conference facilities and meeting rooms, and hosts private events with its own catering.

Who it is not for

Copacabana is wrong for anyone looking for a secluded beach: it sits at the edge of the capital, a short way from the cruise terminal, and is built around departing travellers, with music, games and water sport through the day. It is wrong for an evening, since it closes at half past six. And a visitor who wants to compare prices before arriving will find none on the club's own site.
