The Boatyard

A beach day sold at the gate on Carlisle Bay, priced by who you are, with the credit for lunch built into the entrance.

Editorial entry · sources recorded · operator confirmation pending

The Boatyard stands on Bay Street in St Michael, on Carlisle Bay, in Bridgetown, Barbados. It sits a few minutes by taxi from the cruise terminal, and much of its trade comes from the ships. The club is a bar and restaurant on the sand with a set of things to do in the water in front of it.

The day is sold as an entrance package, at the gate, on a first come, first served basis; no reservations are taken. The price depends on the visitor. An adult staying on the island pays forty US dollars, of which twenty comes back as credit at the bar and restaurant. Barbadian nationals pay seventy Barbados dollars with forty in credit, on showing a Barbados picture ID. Cruise passengers pay forty US dollars with transport back to the terminal and one drink. Children of four to twelve pay less. The package covers chairs and umbrellas, an ocean trampoline, a dive platform, a rope swing, showers and changing rooms, and a forty-five-minute shipwreck and snorkel tour. It is open every day from nine to six, with last orders at half past five.

Four prices for one beach. The club publishes separate terms for nationals, for visitors staying on the island, for cruise passengers and for ship crew, each with its own credit or transfer.

The wrecks offshore. The snorkel tour runs a few minutes by boat to the shipwrecks in the bay, and an independent guide reports that turtles are common there, though not promised.

No booking at all. Everyone queues alike; in high season the advice is to come early.

Who it is not for

The Boatyard is wrong for anyone who wants a reserved place: there are no reservations, only the queue. It is wrong for a quiet day on a ship day, when the cruise trade fills the sand. It is wrong for anyone under eighteen on their own, who must come with a guardian of twenty-five or over. And it is wrong for the evening, because it closes at six.
