Savi
A two-level Italian and Japanese restaurant on Meads Bay, whose beach chairs on the sand come with lunch.
Savi Beach Club stands on Meads Bay, at the West End of Anguilla, next door to the Four Seasons and its Bamboo Bar & Grill. It is a restaurant on two levels spread over thousands of square feet, with a bar and lounge, a boutique selling swimwear and accessories, and a beach service on the sand in front. The operator names no owner and gives no opening date. Eduard Balan is named as managing director; the kitchen is led by the executive chef Dario Schiavo, with Ossama Jouali as head sushi chef.
The day is built around lunch. The operator invites guests to lie back in a beach chair with a first drink, and an island guide states that the beach chairs are included with lunch; day beds are offered as well. No price is published for either. In the current low season the bar, the restaurant, the beach service and the boutique keep the same hours, from half past eleven to four, and the club is closed from Monday to Wednesday. Reservations go through the operator's online booking, a telephone line and e-mail.
Two kitchens in one menu. The cooking joins Italy and Japan: sushi, sashimi and maki beside crab and asparagus tortelli and eggplant parmigiana, with desserts that run from a baba to a wasabi chocolate fondant. The breads are made in the house.
The chair comes with the table. On the island guide's reading, the beach chair is part of lunch rather than a separate hire, so the meal is the way into the day on the sand.
Cooks from London restaurant groups. The executive chef came from Aqua Restaurant Group, Sumosan Twiga and Zuma; the head sushi chef trained at Sumosan Twiga in London and at Sumosan in France. The guide describes the rest of the team as drawn from Anguilla's larger hotels.
Who it is not for
Savi is wrong for anyone who wants a chair on the sand without a meal: the chairs come with lunch. In the low season it is wrong for a visit early in the week, since it is closed from Monday to Wednesday, and for anyone who wants the beach late in the afternoon, since beach service ends at four. And it is wrong for a budget day on Meads Bay: a villa agency places it in its two highest price bands.
