The beach half of a small St Barth hotel, on Pelican Beach in Saint-Jean, with sunbeds and day beds that anyone can book.
Gyp Sea Beach Club stands on Pelican Beach on the bay of Saint-Jean, on the Caribbean side of Saint-Barthélemy. It belongs to Gyp Sea, a 22-room hotel on Colombier hill in the island's higher ground, part of Maisons et Hôtels Sibuet, a family collection; the hotel and the beach club are separate places under one name, together with four beach houses in Saint-Jean.
The day is sold as sun loungers on the sand and day beds, booked through SevenRooms or by WhatsApp and telephone on +590 690 63 33 44; no price is published. Hotel guests are offered a sunbed reservation at the beach subject to availability, but the beach club is open to anyone who books. The hotel's swimming pool is reserved for its own guests. The beach club closes between seasons and announced its reopening for 23 October.
A beach run as a sports base. The club offers a long list of water sports from the sand: Seabob, Fliteboard, snorkelling, stand-up paddle, wakeboard, jet ski, surf, windsurf, kayak, boat days and swimming lessons.
Cooking over fire. The restaurant describes its kitchen as island cooking built around the fire, with a barbecue and a crudo bar, and cocktails come from a separate Coco Bar.
Two characters under one name. The hotel on the hill is presented as the quiet half and the beach club as the lively one, with DJ sets through the day.
Who it is not for
Gyp Sea Beach Club is wrong for a visitor who wants a quiet beach: there is music through the day and motorised water sport off the sand. It is wrong for an outsider who expects the pool, which is kept for hotel guests. And it is wrong for anyone arriving before late October, when the club is between seasons.
