Le Toiny Beach Club
A hotel's beach club on the wild south-east shore of St Barth, open to outside visitors for a long lunch between the pool and the sand.
Le Toiny Beach Club stands on the sand of Anse de Toiny, on the south-east coast of Saint-Barthélemy, below Hotel Le Toiny, a hotel of twenty-two suites each with its own pool. The shore here is the island's wild side: the bay is long and quiet, with a strong current, and draws surfers. Guests of the hotel are driven down from the hill to the beach.
The club offers a private beach setting with sunbeds, loungers, hammocks, a swimming pool and a massage cottage. The operator says it welcomes hotel guests, villa renters and outside visitors, and takes reservations by e-mail; an island guide asks for at least twenty-four hours' notice. It publishes no price for a sunbed. An island guide gives the hours as daily from ten to half past five, with lunch from noon to three. The kitchen cooks Mediterranean dishes on the grill, and a beach shop sells clothes.
Pool and sea side by side. A second pool of the hotel stands by the club, so a day can pass between the pool and the ocean, which matters on a bay with a current.
One night a week. Every Thursday the club opens for the evening, with dinner from half past seven and live music from nine.
Who it is not for
Le Toiny Beach Club is wrong for a swimmer who wants calm water: the bay is known for its current, and an island guide strongly discourages swimming there. It is wrong for anyone who wants the evening, since the day closes in the late afternoon, apart from a Thursday night of dinner and music. And it is wrong for a spontaneous visit, because a reservation is expected a day ahead.
