Casa Malca Beach Club
The beach of an art-filled hotel in a house once owned by Pablo Escobar, open to day visitors without reservation.
Casa Malca Beach Club lies on the hotel's own stretch of white sand at Tulum, on the Caribbean coast of the Yucatán Peninsula. The hotel occupies a mansion once owned by Pablo Escobar, abandoned after his death in 1993. The New York art dealer Lio Malca bought it in 2012 and opened it as a hotel of nine bedrooms in 2015; by 2017 it had forty-two rooms, and it fronted some 180 metres of beach.
The beach club is open every day from ten in the morning to six in the evening, and no reservation is needed. Non-guests buy a daily pass at a separate entrance; groups of more than eight contact the club first. The day is spent on daybeds under shaded cabanas along the shore. The operator publishes no price; an independent guide gives the pass at about one hundred to one hundred and fifty US dollars depending on season, with a non-consumable cover of fifty. Two restaurants serve the sand: Head of a Madman, a grill with seafood, steaks and wood-fired pizzas, and Ambrosía, which is Asian.
A collector's house. The hotel holds a gallery, and contemporary works are shown through the lobby and grounds. The art is rotated, so what hangs changes between visits.
Walk-up, not booked. Unlike many clubs on this coast, the day is not reserved in advance: the pass is bought at the gate.
Families and dogs admitted. The operator describes the beach club as family and pet friendly.
Who it is not for
Casa Malca is wrong for anyone who wants certainty of a place: there are no reservations, and the pass is sold at the entrance. It is wrong for an evening outing, because the beach closes at six. It is wrong for a party of more than eight that turns up unannounced. And it is wrong for someone who would rather not spend a day in a house whose history is part of its draw.
