Ziggy’s Beach Club

Ziggy's Beach Club stands at kilometre seven of the hotel strip in Tulum, on Mexico's Caribbean coast, right next to The Beach Tulum hotel, facing the Caribbean Sea. It is a restaurant and beach club together, open from nine in the morning until sunset, when live music begins. The operator describes it as well known to locals and visitors, and credits an 'honest kitchen' policy of buying from local producers.

The day is sold as a queen-size beach bed against a minimum consumption, which is credited to the food and drink bill. The minimum covers the bed, beach towels, the bathrooms and the indoor and outdoor showers, a pool table and a shaded area with hammocks. It is not charged between 10 July and 15 October, nor to those who come only for lunch. Bookings go through the operator by e-mail and telephone.

A minimum that becomes the bill. What is paid at the door is spent on food and drink rather than charged as a fee, and in late summer and early autumn there is no minimum at all.

Families welcome. An independent guide recommends it to families with young children, notes calm water in front and calls it the best value on the strip.

Music at the end of the day. Live music starts at sunset, as the beds close.

Who it is not for

Ziggy's is wrong for anyone who wants a party or a DJ day: the music comes only at sunset and the guide sends families here. It is wrong for a guest who wants a cabana or a private deck, because the day is sold as a bed on open sand. And it is wrong for someone wanting a long evening on the beach, since the beds are offered until sunset.
