Les Pirates
A family-run beach of sand and pontoons on the Pinède at Juan-les-Pins, held by the Palamiti family since 1980, with meals served on the mattresses.
Plage Les Pirates stands at 23 boulevard Baudoin in Juan-les-Pins, along the Pinède Gould, the town's pine grove. The operation covers about two thousand square metres: a long strip of sand, two pontoons, a covered terrace with a retractable awning, a solarium and private cabins, with a lifeguard on duty. It was taken over in 1980 by the Palamiti family. Alain Palamiti leads a team of seventeen, and the kitchen, with an Italian accent, is overseen by Anna Palamiti.
The day is sold to the public as a transat, on the sand or on the pontoons; in high season there are about four hundred. The operator does not publish a price and says only that the rates vary with the season. Guests are received from half past nine to six in the season, and the beach team serves meals on the mattresses. Lunch is served through the season and dinner as well from late June to early September. The beach closes for part of each winter. Bookings are taken by phone and e-mail.
One family for over forty years. The same family has run the beach since 1980, and the kitchen is still in family hands.
Beside the jazz festival. The operator places itself in the pine grove where the town's summer jazz festival is held, and takes weddings and dinners of up to one hundred and eighty seated.
Who it is not for
Les Pirates is wrong for anyone who wants to know the price before arriving: none is published. It is wrong for someone who wants the beach in deep winter, since it closes each year for several months. And it is wrong for anyone after seclusion: with some four hundred beds in high season, it is a large, busy beach.
