Club 55
A film crew's canteen in 1955, still serving lunch on the same sand, and never open after five.
Club 55 stands on Pampelonne, the long east-facing bay below Ramatuelle, in the commune rather than in Saint-Tropez, whose name the bay carries. It is one of many concessions along the sand and the oldest of them. The club reaches the water directly and keeps its own landing stage, with a boat shuttle alongside the road access. Like the other structures on the bay it is demountable: under the shore plan it is taken down each autumn and put back each spring, so what persists through the winter is the operation, not the building.
The club is held by the de Colmont family and run today by Patrice de Colmont. It began in 1955 as the canteen for the crew of Roger Vadim's And God Created Woman, filmed on this beach, and it has kept the shape of a lunch. It opens at ten, closes at five and is never open in the evening. The day is sold on its own terms: a mattress, a parasol or a straw paillote on the sand is priced apart from the table. The season runs from late March to the first days of November. A boutique stands beside the tables, and the menu turns on wild fish, grilled whole as the catch allows. Vegetables come from the family's farm at La Mole, and since 2023 from a second estate at Brue-Auriac.
Lunch as the whole programme. There is no dinner, no night and no second service. Everything the club does happens between ten and five, which is the reason a crowd of this size leaves the bay quiet by evening.
The same family since the first season. The operation has not changed hands in seven decades, which on a bay where concessions pass between groups is the exception rather than the rule.
Grown, not bought in. A share of the kitchen is supplied from the family's own land, and the house rosé is pressed for the club by the growers' cooperative on the peninsula at Gassin.
Who it is not for
Club 55 is wrong for anyone who wants the evening: it closes at five and does not reopen, and the bay's night belongs to other houses. It is wrong for someone travelling in winter, because between November and late March there is nothing on the sand to visit. And it is wrong for a guest who wants to be left alone, because in high season the tables are full from noon. For a quieter lunch on the same coast, go in spring or autumn, or to the smaller concessions further south along the bay.
