La Rose des Vents
An Italian seafood restaurant with a private beach on Monaco's rebuilt Larvotto front, its sunbeds let by telephone from March to October.
La Rose des Vents stands on Larvotto Beach, on Avenue Princesse Grace, Monaco's main beach and a mostly public one, open all year. Four private beaches operate along it: La Rose des Vents, Le Neptune, La Note Bleue and Miami Plage. The front was rebuilt to designs by Renzo Piano and reopened after a closure of twenty-two months, with fine sand, a non-smoking promenade, a cycle path and new trees. The house also trades as Marco La Rose des Vents; under that name Monaco-Hebdo in 2021 named Maddalena Ballo as its patronne.
From March to October sunbeds under wide umbrellas line the shore, from half past nine to half past six. They are let by reservation only, by telephone. The operator publishes no prices, and the figures printed by others do not agree. The tourist office lists two private cabanas, each for five people, with welcome cocktails. Behind the beds is the restaurant, which the tourist office describes as Italian seafood; the operator adds fresh seafood and light dishes served by the water.
Dressed by Gucci in 2026. For the sixtieth year of the Flora pattern, first drawn for Princess Grace in 1966, the house signed a collaboration with Gucci: parasols and floral screens on the terrace and staff uniforms by the Italian house, set in bright red against the neutral tones of the promenade.
A restaurant first. The beach serves the table rather than the other way round. At weekends DJs play remixed Italian variety and tech house, and above the restaurant La Rose des Vents – The Caffè serves juices and smoothies.
On a public front. The sunbeds are a strip of a shared beach, with the public sand, the promenade and three other private beaches beside them.
Who it is not for
La Rose des Vents is wrong for anyone who wants to book a sunbed online: the beds go by telephone, and at least one booking platform that lists it does not take reservations for it. It is wrong for a sunbed in winter, since the beds run from March to October. It is wrong for someone who wants a secluded cove, because it sits on Monaco's main public beach beside three other clubs. And it is wrong for a visitor who needs a fixed price in advance, because the operator publishes none and the figures printed elsewhere differ.
