L'Orangerie

A family-style restaurant beach on Pampelonne since the 1970s, with mattresses, deckchairs and double beds on the sand.

Editorial entry · sources recorded · operator confirmation pending

L'Orangerie stands on Chemin des Tamaris on the beach of Pampelonne, in the commune of Ramatuelle near Saint-Tropez. It is one of the concessions along the sand, and the operator dates it to the 1970s. The house is a restaurant with a beach in front of it: two bars, a beach house that receives guests and a bar on the sand, and dining rooms that the tourist office counts at two, one of them covered.

The day is sold on the sand as mattresses, deckchairs and double beds, booked through the house's online system, by telephone or by e-mail. The operator publishes no price; the Ramatuelle tourist office lists a deckchair at 40 euro in low season and 45 in July and August, and a mattress at 35. The kitchen, under the chef Adrian Vrabie, serves from breakfast at ten, with dinner in summer. The operator says it is open every day of the year; the tourist office lists a summer season only.

Reached by sea as well as by road. The house runs a boat shuttle to the moorings off the beach, so a guest can arrive from a yacht anchored in the bay.

A beach that can be taken whole. The operator offers the beach and the restaurant for private hire, for weddings and other events.

Open to more than the able-bodied adult. The tourist office lists access for wheelchairs, chairs for babies, a supervised beach and pets welcome.

Who it is not for

L'Orangerie is wrong for anyone planning around firm dates out of season, because the operator and the tourist office disagree on when it is open; telephone first. It is wrong for a guest who wants the beach without the restaurant, because the house is built around its tables and bars. And it is wrong for someone who wants a quiet sand without events, since the whole beach can be privatised for weddings.
