Tropicana
A Pampelonne beach restaurant at Bonne Terrasse, held since 2006 by the house of La Tarte Tropézienne, with sun loungers booked through the beach manager.
Tropicana stands on Route de Bonne Terrasse on the beach of Pampelonne, in the commune of Ramatuelle near Saint-Tropez. It is one of the concessions on the sand, a beach and a restaurant with a large shaded terrace on which every table faces the sea, decorated in white and red. A boat shuttle brings guests in from the water.
Since 2006 it has been operated by the La Tarte Tropézienne group. The day is sold as a sun lounger with a parasol, at a published 40 euro, reserved by telephone with the beach manager; tables are booked online or by telephone, and drinks and the full menu are served at the loungers. At the time of reading the house was closed for the winter and announced its return in spring.
A pastry house on the beach. The kitchen, led by Eric Santalucia, from Toulouse and trained at Alain Ducasse's cooking school, serves Provençal dishes, stuffed vegetables, artichokes à la barigoule, squid and fish, and ends the meal with the group's tarte in several forms.
Supplied from the peninsula. The house names local growers among its suppliers, among them a market gardener from Cogolin, and sets out to buy regional produce.
Two tables under one roof. A bistro-brasserie, La Table Tropézienne, runs on the first floor as a separate sister house.
Who it is not for
Tropicana is wrong for anyone travelling in winter, because the house closes for the season and reopens only in spring. It is wrong for a visitor who wants to book a lounger online, since loungers are reserved only by telephone with the beach manager. And it is wrong for someone who wants a beach without a restaurant attached: the operation is built around the terrace and the tarte.
