Annex Beach
An Italian-owned restaurant and beach on the Croisette in Cannes, in front of the Carlton, with sunbeds by day and a table until two in the morning.
Annex Beach stands on the Boulevard de la Croisette in Cannes, on the sand of the town's main seafront, directly in front of the Carlton Hotel. The operator describes it as a beach and a restaurant together: sunbeds on the sand by day, and an Italian table that runs from lunch into the night.
The house was founded in 2015, when the entrepreneur Sergio Fracchia led a group of Italian investors to open it on the Croisette. The beach opens at ten in the morning every day; the restaurant serves from noon until two in the morning. The day is sold as a sunbed on the sand, booked through the house's online reservation system or by telephone. The operator publishes no sunbed price, and the beach is not bookable on the sunbed-booking platform MySunbed. No restriction on who may book is stated.
An Italian table on a French shore. The kitchen describes itself as rooted in Italian recipes handed down from grandmothers, set against the wider Mediterranean, and the menus are Italian rather than Provençal.
A designed interior. In 2020 the decorator Jacques Garcia was appointed to redesign the house taking a castle on one of the Borromean islands in Italy as his model. For the summer of 2024 the sofas, cushions, booths, beach towels and tableware were dressed in a Roberto Cavalli print.
The night as part of the programme. Dinner shows are held in the evenings, and the house takes launches, parties and large private events, so the beach is the daytime half of an operation that runs late.
Who it is not for
Annex Beach is wrong for anyone who wants to know the cost of the sunbed before arriving, because no price is published and the bed cannot be booked through MySunbed. It is wrong for a guest who wants a quiet evening on the sand, since the restaurant runs until two in the morning with dinner shows. And it is wrong for someone looking for a plain, unadorned beach: the house is designed, styled and themed throughout.
