Hyde Beach Cannes

The beach of the Mondrian hotel on the Croisette, with an Italian kitchen and sunbeds that cannot be booked.

Editorial entry · sources recorded · operator confirmation pending

Hyde Beach Cannes stands on the Croisette in front of Mondrian Cannes, at 45 boulevard de la Croisette, a few steps from the Palais des Festivals. The hotel, of seventy-five rooms and suites over eleven floors, belongs to the Mondrian brand of the Ennismore group. The beach previously traded as La Plage 45 and carries the Hyde name now; the operation is the same.

The day is sold on rows of white and turquoise loungers and umbrellas on the sand. The beach is open every day from ten in the morning to eight in the evening. Sunbeds are not taken by reservation: they are allocated as people arrive. Hotel guests pay for them too, at a preferential rate. Restaurant tables are booked through SevenRooms, and parties of ten or more by e-mail. No price is published.

First come, first served. The bed cannot be secured in advance by anyone, resident or not. For a guest this means arriving early in high season rather than calling ahead.

An Italian table on a French beach. The menu is Italian — antipasti, seafood and pasta — served by the sea, and read from a code at the table.

A beach that also hosts. On Saturday mornings the beach holds a boxing-and-stretching class under the name Hyde Boxing Club, and the team takes private events of up to a thousand standing or a hundred and fifty seated.

Who it is not for

Hyde Beach is wrong for anyone who needs a bed guaranteed before they set out: sunbeds cannot be reserved, even by hotel guests. It is wrong for a visitor who wants a quiet morning on a Saturday, when the beach is given to a boxing class, or an evening when the space is hired out. And it is wrong for someone who wants a Provençal kitchen, because the menu is Italian.
