La Plage du Festival
A walk-in beach on the Croisette in Cannes, where sunbeds are never booked and the head attendant finds you a place.
La Plage du Festival stands at 52 boulevard de la Croisette in Cannes, on the sand between the promenade and the bay. It runs a restaurant, a lighter card for snacks taken at the water's edge, and an oyster bar, the Oysteria, alongside the mattresses.
The day is open to anyone and sold on arrival. The beach takes no sunbed bookings: a visitor presents himself to the head beach attendant, who places him according to what is free. Tables at the restaurant, by contrast, can be booked in advance through an online reservation service, by telephone or by e-mail. The beach is open every day of the week from ten in the morning to six in the evening. The operator publishes no price for the mattress.
No reservation, by design. Where most beaches on this stretch sell the front row ahead, here the sunbeds are allotted on the day by the attendant, so an early arrival counts for more than a booking made weeks before.
Oysters as well as lunch. The Oysteria works beside the main restaurant, and a separate card serves lighter food to people on the mattresses, so a day here need not be built round a sit-down meal.
Who it is not for
La Plage du Festival is wrong for anyone who needs a sunbed fixed before travelling: the beach does not take sunbed bookings, and on a busy day the place depends on availability at the desk. It is wrong for someone who wants to know the cost of the day in advance, because no mattress price is published. And it is wrong for an evening on the sand, since the beach closes at six. A visitor set on a guaranteed front-row place should choose a beach on the Croisette that sells it ahead.
