L'Ondine
A beach restaurant at 64 boulevard de la Croisette in Cannes, trading under the Vilebrequin La Plage name, with deckchairs reserved from April to October.
L'Ondine stands at 64 boulevard de la Croisette, on the beach in Cannes. It trades as Vilebrequin La Plage, and its site is published by Vilebrequin Hospitality SA, a Swiss company based at Plan-les-Ouates. The same name is used for beach venues in Miami, Doha, Elounda and Oman, and Cannes is listed first among them. The décor is by the designer Vincent Darré, and the house calls itself the cheerful, whimsical and colourful beach on the Croisette.
The day is sold as a deckchair, reservable from April to October by telephone or e-mail, or in person at the beach; the house states that deckchairs cannot be booked online. Rates change with the season and are not published. From October to May it opens daily from ten to six, and from June to September from ten in the morning to midnight. Lunch is served from noon to four, and dinner only in July and August, from half past seven to eleven.
Lobster at the centre of the menu. The kitchen is Mediterranean and built on fish and shellfish. Lobster is its signature, served in a cassolette, as a roll, with linguine and in a salad, and a pissaladière on the menu is credited to Glenn Viel.
Terraces beyond the beach season. Deckchairs are reserved only from April to October, but the sea-view terraces are described as open all year, with the lounge serving its menu at any time of day.
One label in several places. The beach is part of a company that runs venues under one name in five places, and its drinks list includes a cocktail called Vilebrequin on the Beach.
Who it is not for
L'Ondine is wrong for anyone who wants to book a deckchair online: it is done by telephone, e-mail or at the beach, and the rate is given only on asking. It is wrong for a beach day between November and March, when deckchairs are not reserved. And it is wrong for someone who wants dinner by the water in June or September, because the evening service runs only in July and August.
