Des Bains 1900

Des Bains 1900 lies on the Lungomare Guglielmo Marconi at the Venice Lido, on the Adriatic side of the narrow strip between the sea and the lagoon, a few minutes from the historic centre. It is a concession on the shore. The resort was inaugurated in the summer of 1900; Thomas Mann stayed there in 1911 and drew on it for his novel, and in 1971 Luchino Visconti shot Death in Venice on its beach and in its halls. Today it is run as a beach club by DBLido S.r.l., which keeps the style of the original.

The day is open to anyone and booked online through an interactive map, for a single day or the whole season. The simplest place is a large umbrella with two loungers on sand or grass for two adults; above it come the historic rectangular cabins and the round, thatched Cabina Tucul, each for up to eight, with a bed, deckchairs and an enclosed changing space. No price is published on the operator's pages. In June, July and August the huts and best positions sell out early and booking ahead is advised.

Huts, not only umbrellas. The beach keeps the Lido's tradition of wooden cabins, and the thatched tucul rounds give a group a private enclosure on the sand.

Four places to eat. La Pagoda serves Venetian cooking on a terrace over the sea, Bamboo is self-service, Bamboo Beach is the sunset bar and the Reef Bar sells coffee, snacks and ice cream through the day.

Weddings on the sand. Civil ceremonies with legal effect can be held on the beach at sunset.
