La Fontelina

A rock ledge below the Faraglioni, reached on foot from Tragara or by boat, where lunch ends at six.

Editorial entry · sources recorded · operator confirmation pending

La Fontelina sits at Via dei Faraglioni 2, at the foot of the three stacks off Capri's southern shore. There is no sand: the shore is rock and terraced stone, and the water below it runs over shallow reefs. No road reaches it. The approach is on foot, a walk down from the Belvedere di Tragara, or by taxi-boat from Marina Piccola.

The club has been run for more than half a century by the Arcucci and Gargiulo families, and its restaurant belongs to the bathing establishment rather than the other way round. A day on the rocks can be taken with or without lunch. The kitchen serves lunch only, from midday to six, and the house sangria is the drink the place is known for. The season closes in mid-October and reopens in mid-April. One source dates the founding to 1949; no second source confirms it, and the register does not state it.

Two families, one house. The operation has stayed with the Arcucci and Gargiulo families for more than fifty years, on a stretch of coast where the setting would sell under any owner.

Arrival is part of the day. With no road, every guest comes down a path or across the water, which fixes the scale of the place more firmly than any door policy.

Who it is not for

La Fontelina is wrong for families with small children: the shore is rock over shallow reef, and the club's own listing says so. It is wrong for anyone who wants dinner, because the kitchen closes at six. And it is wrong for a visitor who wants to arrive by car and walk straight onto a beach. For pools and an easier arrival on the same side of the island, La Canzone del Mare at Marina Piccola is reached by road.
