Bagni di Tiberio

A family bathing house on the ruins of Tiberius's sea palace at Capri, licensed in 1926 and reached by its own boat from Marina Grande.

Editorial entry · sources recorded · operator confirmation pending

Bagni Tiberio stands at Via Palazzo a Mare 41 on Capri, along the cove where the Emperor Tiberius built Palazzo a Mare, one of his twelve residences on the island; the Roman ruins are still visible among the rocks. Giuseppe and Lucia De Martino set up a small inn with a charcoal kitchen here in the early 1900s and took their first licence in 1926. The same family runs it today, under Carmine De Martino.

The day is sold in parts: an entry charge of twenty euros, which covers changing rooms, lockers, showers, toilets and the way down to the sea, then a sunbed at twenty and an umbrella at twelve. The beach is open from nine to six; the restaurant serves lunch, and a snack bar works through the day. The season runs from 19 April to 30 September, with the beach club closing on 15 September. Booking by telephone or e-mail is recommended.

Its own boat. Guests are carried from a private landing at Marina Grande, near the hydrofoil ticket offices, at no charge; the family began rowing guests across in the 1930s. The beach can also be reached on foot along Via Palazzo a Mare, in about ten minutes.

A beach on Capri. The operator notes that a beach is rare on the island, and calls this one suitable for families with children.

A kitchen older than the club. The inn came first and the beach club only after the war; the restaurant above the sea still serves family recipes.

Who it is not for

Bagni Tiberio is wrong for anyone travelling after September: the season ends on the 30th and the beach club earlier. It is wrong for someone who wants an all-inclusive price, since entry, sunbed and umbrella are each charged. And it is wrong for anyone hoping for a party: this is a family house, with lunch, a snack bar and a boat.
