Le Carillon
A beach on the bay of Paraggi, near Portofino, dating itself to 1937, with sunbeds on the sand and on two decks and a club at weekends.
Le Carillon stands at Via Paraggi a Mare 10, on the bay of Paraggi, a few minutes from Portofino; the address lies in the commune of Santa Margherita Ligure, and the bay is within the Portofino Natural Park. The house dates itself to 1937 and says it has been a place for parties since the 1950s. It runs a beach, a restaurant named VESTA and a club.
The day is sold as a sunbed: classic sunbeds on the sand, sunbeds on an upper and a lower deck, and a wooden platform as a further choice. The beach opens every day from nine; no closing time and no season dates are published. Sunbeds are booked online through a reservation service, with no restriction stated, and no price is published. The restaurant takes bookings online and by telephone.
A beach that turns into a club. On Fridays and Saturdays from midnight the house becomes a club, with music and cocktails, a role it says it has played since the 1950s.
Clear water inside a park. The house notes the bay's emerald water and, within the natural park, a sea life that draws divers and snorkellers.
Seafood on the veranda. VESTA serves Mediterranean and Italian cooking centred on fish, with fresh produce arriving daily, lunch and dinner every day, on the veranda or the terrace.
Who it is not for
Le Carillon is wrong for anyone who wants a quiet night by the bay at the weekend: on Friday and Saturday the house runs as a club from midnight. It is wrong for someone who wants the price before booking, since none is published. And it is wrong for anyone planning a visit at the edges of the year without asking first, because no season dates are given.
