Da Ferdinando

Da Ferdinando stands on Fornillo beach in Positano, on the Amalfi Coast. The operator describes fine white sand and shallow water. The business began in 1953 as a simple place to hire out boats and grew into a beach establishment; it is run by the company Bar Bagni Ferdinando srl.

The day is sold by the umbrella: there are more than eighty, and they are booked through the operator's online reservation system, or by telephone and e-mail. The beach is open every day from nine in the morning to seven in the evening. The bar and restaurant serve from breakfast to sunset: salads and sandwiches, Gragnano pasta, grilled and fried fish, with cocktails, local wines and craft beer. Hot showers, wireless internet and step-free access are on the list of services. No price is published.

Boats before beds. The lido grew out of a boat-hire stand, and boats are still part of the trade: the operator lists boat charter, a mooring and a taxi service from the beach.

A family beach rather than a club. The operator presents Fornillo's shallow water as suited to the whole family, and the kitchen is a beach kitchen, not a dining room.

Booked like a seat. The umbrella is reserved online in advance rather than claimed on arrival.
