Gitano Beach

Gitano Beach stands at kilometre 9.5 of the Boca Paila road in the southern hotel zone of Tulum, Mexico, on the Caribbean, just before the entrance to the Sian Ka'an reserve. The operator describes a strip of about a hundred and twenty metres of white sand beside the reserve, next to its own hotel, Casa Gitano. Gitano began in Tulum in the jungle, with a restaurant opened in December 2013 without a view of the sea. Gitano Beach opened in February 2021 at another site and has since moved here. The group also works in Miami, New York and Dubai.

The day is sold as beach beds and cabanas, booked through SevenRooms or WhatsApp. The operator publishes no price. An undated independent listing gives four tiers, from a lounge at one thousand pesos, of which seven hundred is credited to food and drink, to a cabana at five thousand, of which four thousand seven hundred is credited.

Three levels from jungle to sea. The house steps down from a palapa restaurant under the trees to a beach lounge with a DJ booth and a floating disco ball, then to cabanas a few steps from the water.

Cooked over wood. The kitchen works a wood grill, with a Mexican and international beach menu and mezcal cocktails served all day.

Not the jungle Gitano. The name in Tulum first meant a restaurant among the trees with no view of the sea. The beach house is a separate operation, later and by the water.
